English for Academics

This course is for academic staff working in schools, VET colleges, universities and other education institutions who wish to develop their own academic skills, as well as picking up strategies on how to improve the academic skills of their students.

Who is this course for?

This is an intensive professional training course for academic staff working in schools, VET colleges, universities and other education institutions who wish to develop their own academic skills, as well as picking up strategies on how to improve the academic skills of their students.

Format

This English for Academics course can be organised as either a one-week or two-week course. Each week consists of 20 lessons, plus 5 integrated off-site activities or excursions as part of an extensive cultural and social programme.

Course Aims

  • Make your lesson content more engaging and informative for students.

  • Develop your own academic skills and those of your students, such as academic writing, speaking and research skills.

  • Demonstrate increased control and flexibility over a range of grammatical structures and functions to communicate ideas for a range of academic purposes (both written and spoken).

  • Gain awareness of Irish culture and society through topical, interactive lessons.

  • Establish contact with teachers from a variety of education systems to facilitate future networking.

Methodology

This is a practical course which uses real teaching and learning tasks. Teachers completing the course will return home with immediate, practical ideas to implement in their own teaching practice.

Participants are expected to actively participate in the sessions, reflecting on their own beliefs and practice, and sharing thoughts, ideas and expertise in pair work, small groups and with the class as a whole.

During the course, participants will also take part in a range of afternoon activities where they will be encouraged to develop their language skills in a more informal environment outside the classroom and further enhance their knowledge of contemporary Ireland.

Follow Up

Participants on the course are encouraged to keep in contact, sharing materials and experiences when back in their own classrooms. Follow-up contact is made with the participants after completion of the course to gather feedback on the effectiveness of the classroom activities presented and on how their teaching practice has been developed.
