Hiking and Hill – walking in and around Dublin

If you’ve been keeping up with our Social Programme you might already know that you don’t have to travel far outside the city to find beautiful hill walking and hiking opportunities. This month we’ll take a look at some of our favourites and give you an idea of what’s in store over the Summer. The good weather might not stick around for long so get out there and enjoy it!

HowthHowth (11)

Howth is a personal favourite and I’m not alone in this. Just last year it was rated as one of Ireland’s top-10 most instagrammed spots – but you already knew that having read our post back in April.. If not check it out a guide on where you need to go to complete your Irish Insta-portfolio! Howth is known for its cliff walk and the views are incredible no matter the weather

Location: Dublin North Side

How to get there: We recommend the DART to get the full experience as you travel along the coast. But the 31/a Dublin Bus also goes out to Howth and brings you all the way to the summit so you can do the cliff walk from the top down!

Difficulty: Easy! (just wear appropriate walking shoes, especially in wet weather)

Bray / Bray to GreystonesAtlas Bray Trip

We have a lot great memories in Bray as this photo perfectly depicts. Here you can walk to the top of Bray Head for stunning view on the Irish sea and the surrounding Wicklow area or you can make the walk from Bray to Greystones, another beautiful coastal town with an equally beautiful cliff walk

Location: Wicklow, just South of Dublin on the coast

How to get there: Again we recommend the DART but the number 145 Dublin Bus is also a very easy option and runs from Nassau Street (beside Trinity College)

Difficulty: Easy/Medium for the Bray Head climb and Easy for the Bray to Greystones

GlendaloughAtlas Lake023

This word comes from the Gaelic for Valley of the Two Lakes. But two lakes are only the beginning of what this site has to offer! The full walk around the Upper lake is a little challenging in Irish weather but the views are truly amazing and hey, maybe you’ll get to go on a sunny day.

Location: Wicklow National Park

How to get there: Unfortunately public transport is not a viable option but there are private companies that can bring you there from the city centre or come with us! We have this trip planned often as part of our Social Programme but if you’d like to go on your own, come talk to us and we’ll see what we can do!

Difficulty: Medium. The Upper Lake hike has some steep inclines and declines but much of the walk is a boardwalk so nothing you can’t handle!

Dublin Mountains

The Dublin Mountains are often underrated but take our trip to the Hellfire club recently and you might be convinced they are worth visiting. Check out our photos , they’re all on our Facebook page!

Location: Dublin Mountains

How to get there: Again, sadly public transport is not an option but never fear we’re going again this Summer and have transport covered!

Difficulty: Easy! (just wear appropriate walking shoes especially in wet weather)

Dalkey to KillineyCaminata025

Both of these areas are great for hill walking in their own right but put them together and you get something wonderful. We went recently and had a blast. Located on the coast, if the weather allows it (or if you’re brave enough for the cold) it offers the opportunity to make stops for a dip in the sea

Location: Dublin South Side

How to get there: The DART going south!

Difficulty: Easy-peasy

So, whether you’re a seasoned hiker seeking new adventures or a beginner eager to embrace the wonders of nature, Dublin’s hiking and hill-walking trails have something special for everyone. From the misty cliffs of Howth to the tranquil beauty of Glendalough, each step reveals a captivating story waiting to unfold. Soak in the breathtaking vistas, feel the refreshing breeze on your face, and let the trails guide you to moments of awe and introspection. As the summer beckons, don’t miss the chance to venture out and explore these hidden gems, leaving footprints on the paths less traveled. So, let the trails call to you, and let Dublin’s natural wonders ignite the explorer within. Unleash the adventurer in you, and create memories that will linger long after the journey is over. Happy hiking!
