At Atlas Language School, our Introduction to Chinese 1 course is designed to immerse you in the language from day one. Our communicative approach focuses on spoken production and interaction, ensuring you gain confidence in using Chinese in real-life situations.

Face-to-face classes

Collaborative Learning & Task Based Approach
With our communicative and interactive approach to language learning, our Introduction to Chinese 1 course is designed specifically for complete beginners. Our lessons emphasize practical speaking and listening skills, ensuring that students actively engage in real-life conversations from day one. By focusing on fundamental vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structures, our course provides a strong foundation in Mandarin, helping students build confidence in basic daily interactions.
During our ten week course, some of the things you will learn to do are:
- Meet and greet people e.g., 你好;再见;谢谢;对不起;没关系
- Introduce Yourself; Ask Names; Learn Classroom Expressions, especially in the Chinese classroom context e.g., 我是美国人;你叫什么名字?上课;请打开书
- Talk about yourself and others e.g., 我会说汉语
- Talk about family and friends e.g. 你的父亲在哪儿工作?
- Count numbers accurately and tell the time/date e.g. 今天星期几?;现在几点了?
- Ask about and describe things e.g. 请问,这是什么茶?
- Talk about routines or activities e.g. 我想喝茶;明天下午你想做什么?
- Have simple conversations in a restaurant such as, ordering food/drinks, making payments e.g., 您想吃点儿什么?这是菜单。
- Locate items or places e.g., 桌子上有什么?
- Shopping for groceries, clothes / shoes e.g. 多少钱一斤?我能试穿吗?
We also aim to extend stronger students’ learning by learning to do the following additional things;
- Learn about Single-Component Characters and Chinese Radicals.
- Deepen your knowledge of Chinese culture by means of videos or articles.
Methodology and Approach
Our Chinese classes focus on spoken production and interaction and are immersive in nature. In class, the main language will be Chinese and you will be expected to try and speak Chinese as much as possible.
During our ten weeks course, some of the things you will learn to do are:
- Review vocabulary related to activities and the best time to do those activities. Eg. 旅游、觉得、为什么、运动……Language points: “要”、“最”、“几/多”
- Talk about your daily routines. Eg. 生病、早上、跑步、起床、身体……Language points: “是不是”、“每”、“多”
- Describe where things are located, for example, in the kitchen to the left, etc.. Eg. 手表、报纸、房间、旁边、红色……Language points: “的”、“一下”、“真”
- Learn to emphasize important information, for example, I recommended this job, I got this gift for you, etc. Eg. 生日、快乐、晚上、介绍…… Language points: “是……的”、“……的时候”、“已经”
- Make a decision. Eg. 外面、准备、考试、以后…… Language points: “就”、“还”、“有点儿”
- Ask questions with stronger intonation and emphasis. Eg. 羊肉、好吃、面条、因为、所以…… Language points: “怎么”、量词重叠、“因为……所以……”
- Tell someone how far you are from a place and how long it takes/will take for you to reach that place. Eg. 教室、机场、离、公司、小时……Language points: “还”、“就”、“离”、“呢”
- Ask someone to do something. Eg. 再、让、告诉、找、事情……Language points: “……,好吗?”、“再”、兼语句、动词的重叠
- Be able to express whether an action has been completed or not. Eg. 从、跳舞、第一、希望……Language points: 结果补语、“从”、“第-”表顺序
- Ask somebody not to do something. Eg. 课、帮助、别、正在……Language points: “不要……了”、“别……了”、“对”
We also aim to extend stronger students’ learning by learning to do the following additional things;
- Read and understand short paragraphs or simple stories using familiar vocabulary.
- Write short texts or dialogues to describe daily life or personal plans.
Assessment
At the end of the course, students will do a short speaking assessment with the teacher.
Progression
After the course, students should register for Introduction to Chinese 3 (A2.1)

- Expressing comparisons between people. 可能、便宜、比、“比字句(1)”、“可 能”、动词结构做定语
- Describing degree of states / how much/how little — used for clothing, weather, feelings, etc. 得、穿、进、近、程度补语、“‘比’字句(2)”
- Using the aspect particle 着 (zhe) to describe a state or ongoing condition. 一直、路 口、拿、结构助词“着”、“不是……吗”、“往”
- Talking about past experience using the experiential aspect 过 (guo).
(Experience / asking about past experience). 意思、但是、虽然、“结构助词 ‘过’”、“虽然……但是”、“动量补语‘次’”
- Talking about coming events / upcoming time; expressing closeness to an event.(Future or imminent events) 新年、火车站、日、“要……了”、“都……了” 6. Talking about plans and arranging future activities; asking and expressing intentions. 周末、打算、跟、一直、“一点……也/都+不/没……”
- Asking about time; expressing expected return times; arranging schedules. 其实、 把、拿、简单趋向补语、反问
- Describing location and existence; pointing out the quantity and position of objects. 还是、或者、记得、“还是”、存在的表达、“会”表示可能
- Describing habitual actions and attitudes; expressing frequency and feelings. 总是、 努力、热情、“又……又……”、“动作的伴随:V1 着(O1)+V2 (O2)” 10. Expressing changes in physical state; talking about health, condition, and trends. 当 然、最近、越、“了”表示变化、“越来越+Adj/Mental V”

- Use new grammar structures in original sentences. For example, making their own sentences with comparatives, conditionals, or duration expressions instead of just recognizing them.
- Engage in short conversations or role-plays. Practicing asking and answering questions spontaneously using vocabulary and sentence patterns from the lessons.
Assessment
At the end of the course, students will do a short speaking assessment with the teacher.

After the course, students should register for Introduction to Chinese 4 (A2.2)
