Free Things to Do and See in Dublin: How to Keep it Cheap and Cheerful this Month

How can I enjoy Dublin, while spending no money at all? Between crazy rent prices, not to mention all the fun events and canal cans that come with the good weather we’ve had, the Summer may have left you a little short this month. National Museums

Dublin has three National Museums around the city. The Museum of Archaeology, The Museum of Natural History, and The Museum of Decorative Arts. Follow the links to find out where they are and what you’ll see.

Art Galleries

Ireland’s National Gallery houses some of the best pieces from international and national artists, from Caravaggio to Manet to Jack B. Yeats (who actually lived and died in the Atlas building!). If you’re looking for the best of Irish art, the Hughlane Gallery is the place to go. Here you’ll see amazing examples of what our artists have created over the years as well as getting to look at Francis Bacon’s studio. Finally IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) located in Kilmainham is wonderful inside and out – walking around the grounds before entering the gallery itself is highly recommended!

Parks, Greens and Gardens

Dublin is known for its city parks and beautiful gardens and of course they’re all free to enter. Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square, Parnell Square, The Garden of Remembrance, the Botanic Gardens, Harold’s Cross Park… The list is endless. I have often been in Stephen’s Green when the weather is nice and heard a jazz musician playing from within the trees – you might catch an impromptu performance next time you visit! The Phoenix Park is also wonderful at any time of year. Whether you cycle through in the summer or go to feed the reindeer that live there in the Winter, the Phoenix Park is sure to provide a picture perfect (and free) day.

Street Art

Any of you have been on our street art and markets tour you’ll know that Dublin is filled to the brim with amazing public art from talent both young and well established. Take a day to look around the city, it is constantly changing and evolving!

When you have all of those under your belt, The Chester Beatty Library and the Science Gallery are two other great afternoon activities and if you don’t want to undertake these endeavours alone, they’ll be sure to crop up in our Social Programme either this month or very very soon!
