TOEIC Exam

The TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication) Listening and Reading Test is the world’s most widely-used test of professional, workplace English. It is recognised and trusted by many of the world’s largest and most prestigious companies, especially in Japan, South Korea and France. The TOEIC Listening and Reading Test aims to assess your ability to understand English in a business context. It is designed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, New Jersey, USA.

Since the TOEIC test assesses candidates’ ability to understand professional English, the test questions commonly include the following topic areas:

  • Human resources (e.g., hiring, contracts, pensions)
  • Relationships between company departments (e.g., production, accounts, R&D, quality control, etc.)
  • Communication and technologies (emails, meetings, conferences, business trips, etc)
  • Finances and budget (budgets, accounting, invoicing, etc.)
  • Entertainment and media (business meals, culture, events, etc.)

Atlas Language School has been successfully offering and running TOEIC exams since 2012. Here at our Rathmines Exam Centre (Dublin 6), our monthly test dates are open to individuals or groups. You can take the paper-based format as an individual on one of the scheduled exam dates. Exams for groups can be arranged on a day and time to suit your needs, either at the Rathmines Exam Centre, or in another school, college or university school or preferred workplace. We are mobile.

Key Information

The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a multiple-choice test. For both the  reading and listening parts you will have a question booklet and you mark your answers on a separateAnswer Sheet using a pencil.

The test is divided into two timed sections: Listening Comprehension and Reading. There are 100 items in each section. All items are multiple choice.

Listening Comprehension Part 1: Photographs   6 questions   45 minutes (approx)
  Part 2: Question-Response   25 questions
Part 3: Short Conversations   39 questions
Part 4: Short Talks   30 questions
  Total   100

Reading Part 5: Incomplete Sentences   30 questions   75 minutes
Part 6: Text Completion   16 questions
Part 7: Reading Comprehension   54 questions
  Total   100

Arrive 30 to 40 minutes before the exam start time. There is quite a lot of paperwork (including a questionnaire) to complete before the exam can start.

The only thing that you must absolutely bring is the government-issued photo ID you used to register for the test. This can be a passport, European Union (EU) ID card, Biometric Residence Permit or Photographic Driving License (including a provisional licence). Obviously, the ID document must be in date.

Before you go into the exam room, you will be asked to leave your bags, coats, watches etc. in a separate room. No watches at all are allowed in the exam room. We will also collect your mobile phones at the start of the day and keep them in the safe until the exam has finished. Please make sure you switch your phone off. We strongly recommend that you do not bring any valuables (including watches) with you on exam day. We cannot take responsibility for the loss or damage of your personal belongings.

You may only bring into the exam room:

  • A pencil (non-mechanical), H or HB. Remember, NO PENS!
  • A rubber / eraser
  • A pencil sharpener
  • A bottle of still water
  • Your ID document that you used to register for the exam

There is no break between the two sections, so there is no opportunity to leave the test room for a snack or a smoke until the whole test has been completed and all test materials have been collected.

The TOEIC Listening and Reading scheduled tests at our Exam Centre usually take place on a Wednesday afternoon, with a start time of 2.00pm. Although we need a little extra time to complete some paperwork before the test starts, the test itself is scheduled to take about 2 hours. With a test start time of 2.00pm, you should certainly be finished before 4.15pm after we have collected in all test materials.

Each of the two sections in the TOEIC Listening and Reading test contains 100 questions. The final score is determined after using a conversion method which awards each candidate a score from 5 to 495 for each section. These two marks are then combined to make a final score from 10 to 990.

There are no internationally accepted pass or fail scores for the TOEIC test. It is very much up to individual schools, universities and companies to determine what they need you to attain in the test. In France, some higher education establishments require a TOEIC score of at least 785 to award their students an engineering degree. Other institutions may require a score of 800 in the TOEIC test to qualify for an international position. It very much depends on the institution that is advising you to take the exam, so be sure to find out what they require.

As a guide, ETS, the TOEIC test designers and awarding body, has developed a comparison table to give candidates and organisations an idea of the correlation between TOEIC Listening and Reading Test scores and the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The CEFR organises language proficiency in six levels, A1 to C2. See the table below.

Minimum TOEIC Score (Listening) Minimum TOEIC Score (Reading) Minimum TOEIC Score (overall) CEFR Level
60 60 120 A1
110 115 225 A2
275 275 550 B1
400 385 785 B2
490 455 945 C1

Officially, there is no “pass” or “fail” score. Results are simply on a sliding scale from 10 to the top mark of 990. You will just receive an individual score on that scale.

Officially, TOEIC Listening and Reading results are released a maximum of 3 weeks after the exam date. In practice, in our experience, the results are generally released by ETS about two weeks after the exam date. First, you will receive an email from Atlas with those results.

Your TOEIC score is valid for two years.

After releasing the results by email, ETS will then send us your certificates and score reports. Usually within a week of receiving your results by email, we will send you another email notifying that you can collect your certificates and score reports at the school. We will ask you to confirm that you can collect your certificate, or ask if you would like us to post them by registered post. There is an additional 10 Euro fee to cover these costs.

The first step to prepare successfully for the test is to know what your target score is. What score does your school, university or company, or any future potential company or organisation require you to get? Be sure to find that out.

When it comes to preparing for the test, here’s our core study advice to help you maximise your potential:

  • Understand the format of the TOEIC test and the different listening and reading question types.
  • Find out what English level you currently have and identify your strengths and the areas in which you can improve, especially when it comes to your listening and reading skills.
  • Listen to podcasts and YouTube videos with and without the transcripts.
  • Practise your reading skills by reading a wide range of materials, such as books (including graded readers), newspapers and magazines, both in print and online.
  • Target key vocabulary in TOEIC-type topic areas such as the workplace and business meetings. Make a note of any useful expressions you come across. Build a vocabulary notebook.
  • Practise your exam skills by doing practice tests, first untimed to practise the strategies that work for you, and then timed so that you can also learn to manage your time. This will help you gain the skills to efficiently identify the key words, predict answers, and eliminate the clearly wrong answers (the distractors) in multiple choice questions.
  • Go online! There are plenty of materials to discover and use. A good starting point is the TOEIC Test Preparation Materials on the ETS website.

For more advice and tips on how to prepare for the exam, you can also download our TOEIC Preparation Guide. And, of course, you can also sign up to join one of our part-time or full-time English courses here at Atlas Language School in Dublin.
