Learn English with Music Videos and Lyrics
Using music to learn languages can be a fun and effective way to help you memorise not only individual words, but longer phrases and expressions. And, of course, it will also really help you improve your pronunciation and oral comprehension.
There are a few websites that offer free access to lessons and games using lyrics and music. One website that we’ve used at Atlas to learn English with music and song lyrics is Lyrics Training.
What is ‘Lyrics Training’?
Lyrics Training gives you easy access to music videos that you can use to learn English with music videos and lyrcis. You can use it to practise your English, and other languages. All you have to do is pick your level, choose your songs and listen to the lyrics as you watch the videos. Really, it’s a great tool for all students. Even Elementary students can use it to build upon their existing knowledge because you can tailor the task to your level. Give it a try. It’s different from other typical listening exercises you might hear from the course book listenings in class. Sometimes the pronunciation in these is a little too ‘adjusted’ or ‘perfect’, but with songs you can really hear the rhythm of English. And of course, listening to your favourite songs and discovering the real lyrics is really good fun. As I say, give it a try!
How does it work?
If you go to the Lyrics Training website, you can either search for specific songs that you’d like to listen to, or you can look for a singer and then choose one of the songs from their lists. Maybe you’re a fan of Ed Sheeran or Adele. Have a look at their songs. After choosing one of the many videos available, select a game mode (or level) and press . You must guess the missing word(s) while listening to the music in order to move on to the next part of the song. Choose between the “write mode” and “choice mode”. If you don’t give the correct answers on time, the music will temporarily stop. This can be challenging but it’s fun and gets us to listen carefully so we can continue listening to the song. Of course, you can sing along as well!
Here a quick Lyrics Training YouTube tutorial about how to use it.
