Course Overview

This course is for teachers who want to upgrade their language skills while gaining a better understanding of Irish life and culture. Participants must have at least a good intermediate level (B1+) of English and must bring an electronic device to connect to wifi – i.e., a phone, tablet or laptop.

  • 20 lessons of group tuition / week
  • 1 lesson = 50 minutes
  • Course Duration: 1 week or 2 weeks
  • Level: Upper-intermediate (B2)

Format

This Overseas Teachers’ Course can be organised as either a one-week or two-week course consisting of 20 classroom contact hours per week, plus an extensive cultural and social programme which is directly linked to the morning classroom sessions.

Course Aims

  • to provide an opportunity to develop and consolidate participants’ own language skills
  • to promote awareness of Irish literature, culture and society through topical, collaborative lessons

  • to promote and facilitate a practical critical engagement with new ideas and recent pedagogical developments in ELT
  • to establish contacts between teachers from a variety of European backgrounds and facilitate future networking.
  • Contemporary: education system, tech-hub, economic, housing, identity, music, Brexit

Features of the Course

  • New ideas and recent pedagogical developments in ELT
  • Content appropriate for B2-C2 level
  • Focus on Language – in particular, English as it is and has been used in Ireland, slang, cultural dos and don’ts
  • Focus on Literature, past and contemporary – Maria Edgeworth, WB Yeats, James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen, Samuel Beckett, and contemporary authors of literary fiction, poetry, crime, non-fiction, etc.
  • Contemporary: education system, tech-hub, economic, housing, identity, music, Brexit

Outcomes

  • will have upgraded their language, including English as it is used in Ireland
  • will have been introduced to and discussed aspects of Irish literature, culture and society, contemporary and historical
  • will have developed skills and strategies for a reflective, evaluative teaching and learning practice
